5 WAYS IN WHICH SOCIAL MEDIA HAS CHANGED YOU FOR THE WORSE

"I check my Instagram like a 100 times, that too my own account, it is honestly an obsession I will never admit to".

"If I have to upload a photo, know that I have at least seen, edited and imagined how it would look on my feed like a billion times".

Don't pretend to not relate to these statements. They come from us. We the millennials, a generation that has successfully been one of the most woke generations of all time. Be it our constant support to the LGBTQ+ community or our realization of climate change and the efforts we initiated to bring about awareness on the same.

This woke generation still has had its own drawbacks. Which the digital space has helped built a community for the understanding of world's problems, generating opinions and helped with finding concrete solutions, we are also trapped in the wormhole of trying to be utterly perfect on these same social media accounts.

Here are top 5 ways (out of a whole not really surprising but terrifying list) in which social media has changed us -

1.You judge more: Judging who? Yourself, your friends, celebrities, even the people you absolutely hate, everyone is part of this mirage of perfection waiting to maybe someday make our real lives as beautiful as it looks online. The more I think about our usage of social media the more I realize how we are basically judging people's entire lives through a set of pictures and short clips. A photo today describes how someone's day was, a video manages to capture everything that the person might feel. How did we come to this?

2.You want perfection, but mostly online( because hey! People are watching it right :)) : Hiding under the disguise of our pretty and distracting social media accounts are our real lives that we spend beautifying our virtual lives online. If you had spend all that time improving yourself, working on your flaws, your career, your relationships, things would have turned out completely different right?

3.You compare : Okay this really triggers me to the core. If you are an ordinary girl who aspires to become a business woman someday and you are comparing your body and beauty to Kendall Jenner or Gigi Hadid what sense does it make? You do realize that their careers are dependent on this right? That body is all they work on. You on the other hand have college, work, money issues( if you are broke like me) and a whole life of your own. Do not let some pictures of some celebrity make you feel insecure about yourself. Look up to people that have been successful doing what you want to, someday. Also if you really want to compare, compare yourself to your own self from last year. Any improvements? Don't see one? Well see, you already got something to work on!

4.You waste your time like it's nobody's business : While I say all this, I myself am guilty for scrolling down the addictive Instagram more than turning the pages of some book, any book for that matter, as I have always been a reader and an avid one at that. Many of you might have realized that the activity you otherwise spend time doing the most has now just been a part of your memory because today all you do is scroll and judge, and compare and hate yourself for eating that pizza, ufff, stop that gurll! With all the talent you have this is not what you should be doing!

5.(Adiós social life) Social life? More like what I didn't hear you sis: We meet people online, chat with them, but when it's time to make plans, real plans with real people you back out. I have done this too. So yeah! We all are in it together. And I get it okay, that we are too busy with everything to spare enough time but maybe that time you spend seeing how someone else got in touch with a friend maybe you can go out and surprise your people. Also if you don't have a social life and are lazy to even meet your own people, it doesn't mean you are an introvert it only means you don't want to bath, be presentable and get off your phone. That is not being an introvert. There I said it!

We only spill the real tea here sisters so if you are offended maybe it's time to change a few things, or not whatever, take your time. Just love people more than their social media accounts is all I can say! Keep growing, keep loving!
